Mercer County couple charged after child dies from apparent malnourishment

PRINCETON, W.Va. — The parents of a 21-month-old boy were arrested on Thursday, after the child died at Princeton Community Hospital.

Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler announced that Cristy and Corey Moore had been charged with child neglect causing death.  The child had been brought to the emergency room by his mother on Thursday afternoon.  Sitler said he was informed by hospital officials that the victim was malnourished, and weighed 14 lbs. at the time of his death.

According to the investigating officer, the parents stated that the child had been suffering from a cold, and had lost between 14 and 18 lbs., as a result.  A report released by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said the child had not been seen by a medical practitioner for more than a year.

Sitler said the couple’s three other children also showed signs of malnourishment, and were being cared for.
