Timberwolves take care of business against Spring Mills
No. 2 Spring Valley scored 56 first-half points en route to a 77-7 victory against No. 15 Spring Mills.
The Timberwolves (11-0) scored just 1:21 into the action when Will Adkins threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Nate Ellis.
Spring Mills (5-6) got even with its lone score of the game on the first play of the ensuing drive as Keon Padmore-Johnson found Rohan Parchment on a 67-yard touchdown pass.
Graseon Malashevich put Spring Valley back in front with a 23-yard TD reception on a pass from Adkins at the 8:56 mark of the opening quarter.
Owen Chafin’s 4-yard TD run with 2:31 to play in the first doubled the lead, and Chafin scored again later in the quarter on a 34-yard run that sent the Timberwolves into the second with a 27-7 advantage.
Cody Stanley’s 3-yard TD run and a 36-yard touchdown reception by Malashevich made it 41-7. Spring Valley continued to cruise from there to set up a quarterfinal contest against No. 7 Huntington.
Musselman wins 10th game, eliminates John Marshall
The No 4 Applemen had no difficulty in a 60-14 first-round win against the No. 13 Monarchs.
Musselman (10-1) quarterback Tre Beard rushed for an 11-yard touchdown for the game’s first points, and the Applemen recovered a squib kick on the ensuing kickoff to set up Beard’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Blake Hartman.
Later in the opening quarter, Beard threw a 17-yard TD pass to Ethan Wilson and rushed for his second touchdown from 5 yards out, allowing the Applemen to hold a 26-0 lead.
Jordan Wood got John Marshall (6-5) on the scoreboard with a 6-yard touchdown run, but Kagen Teets caught a 37-yard TD pass and Beard scored on a 21-yard run later in the second quarter to make it 40-7 at halftime.
Musselman will welcome No. 5 Ripley in next week’s quarterfinal.
Parkersburg eliminates Wheeling Park
The No. 9 Big Reds won a one possession game against the No. 8 Patriots for the second time this season, claiming a 28-21 win at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Kionte Peacock’s 87-yard kickoff return proved to be the winning score and answered Alex Dunlevy’s 8-yard TD run that pulled Wheeling Park (7-4) even with 7:11 remaining.
Parkersburg (7-4) had taken a 21-14 lead with 10:16 left on Brenton Strange’s 23-yard touchdown reception, which he hauled in on a pass thrown by Jake Johnson.
The Big Reds got the scoring started on an 8-yard TD run by Tyler Moler, but Wheeling Park pulled even on a Rapheal Bradley touchdown run.
Shane Miller answered with a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Big Reds a 14-7 lead — a TD that was set up by Johnson’s 74-yard pass to Strange.
Kenya Robinson’s 1-yard TD run with 4:22 left in the third quarter tied the gamea at 14.
Parkersburg, which beat Wheeling Park 57-51 in the regular season, will take on the winner of Saturday’s first-round game between No. 1 Martinsburg and No. 16 Hurricane.
Class AA
Beavers have their way with Oak Hill
Defending Class AA state champion Bluefield easily knocked out Oak Hill with a 56-7 win at Mitchell Stadium.
J.J. Davis’ 58-yard touchdown run got the scoring started and Bluefield was in total control with a 21-0 lead after Jamere ‘Juice’ Edwards’ 29-yard touchdown run was followed by an interception for a TD by Marquis Neal.
Arnold Martin’s 5-yard TD run put the No. 2 Beavers (10-1) on top, 28-0.
Davis brought in a touchdown pass from Chandler Cooper to make it 35-0, and Martin and Cooper added rushing TDs soonafter to push the lead out to 49-0.
Oak Hill (7-4) quarterback Khori Bass was injured early in the loss.
Bluefield will face the winner of Saturday’s matchup between No. 7 Keyser and No. 10 Wayne.
Bridgeport blows by Frankfort
The No. 3 Indians outscored the No. 14 Falcons 21-0 in the second quarter to cruise to a 49-13 victory.
Bridgeport (10-1) tailback Jake Bowen accounted for all three second-quarter TDs, scoring on runs of 2, 12, and 87 yards.
Devin Vandergrift started the second-half scoring with a touchdown run, before throwing his second TD of the night to push the lead out to 42-6.
With the win, the Indians advance to face Harrison County rival Robert C. Byrd in next week’s quarterfinal.
King helps RCB knock off Shady Spring
Freshman Jeremiah King stood out in his first postseason game to help lead No. 6 Robert C. Byrd to a 35-15 win against No. 11 Shady Spring.
King scored the Eagles’ first two touchdowns of the game on a 33-yard run and a 39-yard pass from Xavier Lopez to help stake RCB to a 14-0 lead.
Tyler Bragg’s 81-yard touchdown run allowed the Tigers to trim the deficit in half, and it stayed that way until halftime despite three first-half interceptions by RCB’s Andrew Sponaugle.
Ghovan Davidson scored on a 1-yard run with 37 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 21-7, then added a 47-yard TD run with 8 minutes left to put the game out of reach.
Class A
Defending champ Wheeling Central back on track
After closing their regular season with a loss to Magnolia, defending Class A state champion Wheeling Central rebounded with a 61-30 win over Tyler Consolidated. The game was played at Brooke High School.
The No. 1 Maroon Knights (10-1) jumped out to a 34-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Curtis McGhee tossed three touchdown passes to Bray Price in the opening 12 minutes. Adam Murray and Jordan Waterhouse added touchdown runs.
McGhee would later add touchdown tosses to Anthony Robbins and Jalen Creighton in the second half.
Central will host Magnolia in the quarterfinal round.
Mark Rucker had two touchdowns runs and caught two touchdown passes for No. 16 Tyler Consolidated (6-5).
Blue Eagles earn another meeting with Central
No. 9 Magnolia made a four-hour trip to Franklin and extended its season with a 28-6 win at No. 8 Pendleton County.
The Wildcats were hosting a postseason game for the first time in school history.
Senior quarterback Patrick Mirandy scored three rushing touchdowns and Gage Adams added another for the Blue Eagles, who led 14-6 at the half.
Pendleton’s (8-3) lone score came on a Kole Puffenberger to Timothy Thorne touchdown pass.
The Blue Eagles (8-3) will face defending state champion Wheeling Central Catholic in the quarterfinals. Magnolia hopes to defeat the Maroon Knights for the second time in three weeks.
Midland Trail moves on
The Patriots (11-0) overcame an early deficit to defeat upset-minded No. 15 Tucker County 14-2 at Roger Eades Field.
Morgan Ferris and Chris Vines had touchdown runs for Trail. Ferris’ 5-yard scoring run in the second quarter gave the Patriots the lead for good and put them up 8-2 at the half.
Vines put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter as he scored on fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line.
Midland Trail, the No. 2 team in Class A, will host Sherman in the quarterfinals. Tucker County (6-5) was making its first playoff appearance since 2013.
Mount View rallies past Ritchie County
No. 3 Mount View scored 21 unanswered points to clinch a spot in the Class A quarterfinals, defeating No. 14 Ritchie County 34-14. The game was played at Hunnicut Field in Princeton.
Terry Headen opened the scoring for Mount View and Elijah Barner had two touchdown runs in the second half to give MVHS a lead they would not relinquish.
The Golden Knights (10-1) led 13-6 at halftime.
Mount View will host the Summers County/Williamstown winner in the quarterfinals.
Ritchie County (7-4) qualified for the playoffs for the first time in five years.
America leads Doddridge into second round
Junior Hunter America rushed for 314 yards and six touchdowns as No. 4 Doddridge County advanced to the Class A quarterfinals with a 40-14 win over No. 13 Webster County.
The Bulldogs (11-0) are making back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time in school history.
Doddridge ran 47 plays from scrimmage and America carried the ball 36 times.
Junior Austin Kelley had fifteen tackles and an interception to key the Doddridge defensive effort.
DCHS will host the Van/Cameron winner in the quarterfinals.
