One dead and one injured in Grant County blaze

MT. STORM, W.Va. — A child is dead and an adult hospitalized with injuries after a fire early Wednesday morning in Grant County.

Members of five area fire departments were dispatched to the burning home about two miles from the Mt. Storm community around 1:30 a.m.

“The house was fully involved and most of it was already on the ground when we got there,” said Captain Justin Simmons. “We were able to find one patient who was taken to Garrett Memorial Hospital.”

The female patient was able to tell fire fighters her five year old son was still in the home. According to Simmons, a search was made of the perimeter in hopes the child had fled and was hiding somewhere. Unfortunately he was not and the boy’s remains were found in the ashes of the home.

“We did a search around the whole premises in about a 200-yard circle,” he explained. “Once that was completed, we notified the fire marshal and medical examiner.”

The names of the victims have not been released and no cause for the fire is known. The mother has been transferred tot he West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh for treatment of her injures.

The blaze had been burning for a while before the fire department was notified. The call was made to 911 by a neighbor who woke up and noticed the home in flames.
