Power restoration efforts to continue into the weekend

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It’s going to be Saturday night before Appalachian Power has service restored to all customers impacted by Thursday’s ice storm.

According to the company’s Friday morning restoration report, there remained more than 11,000 customers without service. Most of those were in Raleigh (7,2127), Mercer (3,005), Greenbrier (1,532) and Fayette (957) counties.

The utlity expects to have service restored to customers in Raleigh, Fayette, Greenbrier and Summers counties by 4 p.m. Saturday and Mercer County by 10 p.m. Saturday.

According to Appalachian Power, “Gusty winds resulted in additional outages Thursday evening and overnight. Much of the storm’s damage is caused by trees that have fallen under the weight of the ice and sleet mix. This has also caused many downed power lines and broken poles in these areas.

“About 1,000 workers are taking part in the restoration efforts. Appalachian Power has moved company and contract line workers from parts of West Virginia and Tennessee that were unaffected by the storm to assist local crews with damage assessment and service restoration. The company has also secured some additional help from Kentucky Power.”
