Truck hauling red dye crashes on I-70 near Wheeling causing mess

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — The commute Friday morning for drivers in the Wheeling area was tricky and red.

A tractor-trailer carrying powdered red food dye crashed at the Pennsylvania line on I-70 east of Wheeling, rolling onto its side and spilling boxes of the red food dye powder.

The accident happened around 3 a.m. as the trailer carrying the dye became detached as the truck went into a ditch.

Authorities said the driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital.

Traffic on I-70 eastbound was backed up as far south as Moundsville as crews worked to clean up the dye mess. Both eastbound lanes on the interstate was shut down for hours.

I-470 and Route 2 in Wheeling was also backed up for hours during the clean up.
