Turnpike worker treated and released after large truck slides into toll booth

CHELYAN, W.Va. — A toll collector on the West Virginia Turnpike was injured Friday morning after a large truck slammed into a toll booth.

The collision happened at about 6 a.m. at the toll plaza near Chelyan in Kanawha County. The injured worker was trapped inside the booth for a few minutes. He was treated and released from a Charleston hospital.

According to authorities, the driver of a UPS tractor-trailer said his rig slid into the booth.

State Parkways Authority General Manager Greg Barr said truck drivers need to reduce their speed coming into the toll plaza areas.

“All vehicles, especially large commercial vehicles, should slow down to the posted 5 miles per hour as they enter and exit the toll lanes for the vehicle occupants’ safety as well as for the safety of the Turnpike employees working in the toll booths. Thankfully our toll collector was not seriously injured,” Barr said.

The large truck was been removed from the toll lane by 7 a.m. The dented toll booth was being removed and replaced Friday afternoon.
