CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Jefferson County Delegate Riley Moore has filed pre-candidacy papers to run for state Treasurer in 2020, according to information on the Secretary of State’s website.
Moore, a Republican, who was defeated in the Nov. 6 General Election by former Delegate John Doyle by 875 votes, has formed a committee called Moore for West Virginia.
Moore was lined up to be the House Majority Leader under House Speaker Roger Hanshaw had he won.
Perdue, who is currently in his sixth four-year term, is the only Democrat left on the state Board of Public Works. Republicans have targeted him in several elections, MetroNews Statewide Correspondent Brad McElhinny said.
“He beat Ann Urling last go around, beat Mike Hall a few years ago. It’s been hard for the Republicans to take down John Perdue as they would like to do and now it looks like Riley Moore is going to try and do it,” McElhinny said.
MetroNews “Talkline” Host Hoppy Kercheval said Perdue has proven to be a strong candidate over the years.
“He’s always been extremely well-connected at the county level and knows everybody who is anybody in the Democrat Party in West Virginia. He has that courthouse strength,” Kercheval said.
Perdue hasn’t yet announced if he’ll seek reelection.
Moore is the grandson of former West Virginia three-term governor the late Arch Moore and the nephew of U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito.
