Shooting leaves one dead in Monroe County

BALLARD, W.Va. — West Virginia State Police have confirmed that a Monroe County resident was shot to death on Sunday evening.

The incident reportedly happened at a home on Orchard Road in Ballard. Officers who responded to a call regarding an altercation in progress said they found a man lying in the front yard of the residence with single gunshot wound to the upper torso.  He was later identified as 37-year-old William Joseph Spencer of Ballard.  The suspected shooter was at the scene when state troopers arrived, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the altercation.

A department spokesperson said an investigation was underway, and that no criminal charges had been filed.  The suspect’s name was withheld.
