Man arrested for threatening to ‘shoot up’ 3 eastern panhandle locations

RANSON, W.Va. — A Jefferson County man was arrested after allegedly threatening mass shootings at three locations in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle.

Jon Phillips of Ranson allegedly said he planned to ‘shoot up’ a hospital, a high school and a Walmart.

Jon Phillips, 27 of Ranson, allegedly told a Berkeley Medical Center physician on Nov. 20 he was going to “shoot up” the hospital. Phillips also indicated he had plans to commit mass shootings at a high school in Jefferson County and a local Walmart store, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

The hospital notified the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department, which responded and spoke to the physician.

The physician told a responding deputy Phillips had not been diagnosed with a medical condition that would inhibit him from understanding his actions were illegal.

Phillips has been arrested on a felony charge of terrorist threats. He remained at the Eastern Regional Jail as of Tuesday under $50,000 bond.
