Convicted murderer sentenced in Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man is going to prison for 40 years for shooting killing his wife.

Randall “Todd” Chapman, 47, of Big Chimney, was sentenced in Kanawha County Circuit Court Thursday after an Oct. 16 guilty plea to a charge of second degree murder.

Chapman’s attorney said in court Thursday that his client still doesn’t remember what happened on a night in September 2017. Chapman told police that he and his wife, Shirlene Chapman, had been drinking heavily and he also took two of his wife’s prescription pills. He woke up to find her dead. He told deputies he thought she committed suicide.

The state Medical Examiner said Shirlene Chapman did not die of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was shot in the back. A gun was found near her body.
