RCB uses late run to win opener over Winfield, 66-53

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Robert C. Byrd closed the game with a 19-6 run to pull away from Winfield, 66-53 in the season opener for both teams. The game was part of Fairmont Senior’s annual tournament on the opening weekend of the season.

The Flying Eagles allowed just twelve points in the final quarter and used balanced scoring throughout the lineup to defeat the 2018 Class AA state semifinalists.

Khori Miles scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Flying Eagles. Gavin Kennedy added 17 and Bryson Lucas chipped in with a dozen. Christian Frye paced the Generals with a 19-point effort.

Winfield led 15-9 after the first quarter but the Flying Eagles closed the first half with an 11-4 run and Byrd would not trail the rest of the way. A layup by Miles’ midway through the third quarter would put RCB ahead for good.

“Obviously we made mistakes,” said Robert C. Byrd head coach Bill Bennett. “You never know what to expect for a first game. But I am proud of the way the guys hung in and did enough things to put the game away at the end. I told them it was going to come down to our defensive effort and our rebounding. I thought our rebounding got better in the second half.”

The Flying Eagles will face Wyoming East Saturday while the Generals will face Fairmont Senior.
