Notre Dame stays perfect with late rally vs. Lewis, 61-58

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Behind a 24-point effort from senior Taylor Martino, Notre Dame stayed perfect on the season by defeating Lewis County 61-58 at Angelo Basile Court.

The Irish improved to 5-0 while the Minutemaids fell to 2-1.

Notre Dame used a 12-2 run late in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good in the final minute. Emilee Henderson’s layup with 30 seconds remaining gave the Irish their only lead of the game.

The game was tightly contested throughout. Back-to-back three-pointers from Bella Posey gave Lewis their largest lead of the game, 11-3 in the opening minutes. Posey scored 17 points. The ‘Maids were led by a 19-point performance from Payton Campbell.

Playing in her first game since surpassing the 1,000-point plateau, Martino connected on three 3-pointers. Henderson added 21 points.

“This is the third time this year we have been down and came back,” said Notre Dame head coach Bob Martino. “That shows a lot of resilience from them. We have three seniors. They kind of carry us. They are very calm. I don’t know if they are just not listening to me in timeouts but they are very calm. But I am very happy for them.”

Notre Dame has posted quality victories over regional rivals Trinity and Tucker County in the first two weeks of the season.

The Irish return to action Thursday at the Doddridge County Invitational while the Minutemaids will host Liberty Wednesday.
