Police search for vandals who damaged baseball field at George Washington High

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police are now on the hunt of a black SUV which caused considerable damage to the baseball field at George Washington High School in Charleston.

“They drove down the hill and through the outfield fence and took out about 30 feet of that fence,” said George Washington Athletic Director Shawn Wheeler. “They did a couple of doughnuts in the outfield and then busted through the chained gate on the other side of the outfield.”

No monetary value has been placed on the damage, but it’s a tough blow for a school which has limited space for extra curricular activities.

“We try to keep the field looking as good as well can, but it gets a lot of use,” said Wheeler. “The soccer team practices on it sometimes, the band practices on it, and baseball. It gets a lot of use and we hate that something like this happened.”

The field is under video surveillance and the video is now in the hands of Charleston Police. They are also looking for other video cameras in the area of the school which also may have captured images of the vehicle to help identify the culprits.

“We’ve got a car on video,” said Wheeler. “We’re trying to track other sources of video down.”
