Few remaining Sears, Kmart stores in WV spared from company’s latest closing list

CHICAGO, Ill. — Sears Holding Company announced another round of store closings Friday, but none of the few remaining stores in West Virginia were on the list.

Sears told workers at 80 Sears and Kmart stores it would begin liquidation sales in two weeks with plans to close the stores in March.

Sears Holding Company announced in October that its Sears store at the Morgantown Mall in Westover and the Kmart store in the Patrick Street Plaza in Charleston would close in early 2019.

After Jan. 6, there will only be two Kmart stores left in West Virginia–both in the Charleston area. One in Kanawha City and another at the Crossings Mall near Elkview. There will remain only one Sears retail location–a store at the Huntington Mall.

There are four Sears Hometown stores and two auto centers left in West Virginia.

Sears had set a 4 p.m. Friday deadline for bids to buy the company.
