Sports bettor wins $100K at Charles Town’s Hollywood Casino with $5 bet

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — One bettor at Hollywood Casino sports book in Charles Town certainly has started the new year on the right foot.

A man won $100,000 after betting $5 on a 15-leg parlay involving Sunday’s NFL games.

The winning ticket

“The individual bet was five dollars, that is all it was,” Erich Zimny, the VP of Racing and Sports Operations at Hollywood Casino, said on MetroNews “Talkine.” “They bet on 14 different games and the over/under in one game so 15 different events.

“You have to win every single one. If you do the math and assume every one is a coin flip, the real odds of him hitting this is the 30,000 to 1 range. It is very rare, the first one we have had since we opened.”

The winning ticket included Cowboys +6: Cowboys beat Giants 36-35, Chiefs -13: Chiefs beat Raiders 35-3, Patriots -13: Patriots beat Jets 38-3, Eagles -7: Eagles beat Redskins 24-0, Lions +8: Lions beat Packers 31-0, Texans -7: Texans beat Jaguars 20-3, Browns +6: Ravens beat Browns 26-24, Falcons +1: Falcons beat Buccaneers 34-32, Bills -3: Bills beat Dolphins 42-17, Colts -1: Colts beat Titans 33-17, Bengals +14: Steelers beat Bengals 16-13, Bears +6: Bears beat Vikings 24-10, Bears vs. Vikings under 41: Combined for 34 points, Chargers -7: Chargers beat Broncos 23-9, and Rams -10: Rams beat 49ers 48-32.

“When someone hits those 15 leg parlays, there is going to be a game or two in there where they got a huge lucky break or they got a miracle finish or something,” Zimny said. “Looking at the ticket, he was pretty comfortable in most of the games except for one.”

Zimny added the man who won 20,000 to 1 odds money and walked out of the casino with close to $80,000 in cash after taxes were taken out. The winner’s name has not been released.

“We recognize that it is part of the game, part of the business that we are in,” he said. “Sports betting, that we have learned, is pretty low margin with high volatility. Stuff like this happens.

“We got beat game five of the World Series for hundreds of thousands of dollars and we made it back the following weekend. It’s just the nature of the beast.”

Zimny also reported, “really good” action since the opening of the sports book at the casino as football winds down. He reports $40 million in total that has been bet.

“The foot traffic has increased here since we put the sports book in. It’s a really good amenity. I am very comfortable in saying that there are a good number of people who would not be here if it wasn’t for that.”
