HURRICANE, W.Va. — Cabell Midland freshman Chandler Schmidt scored a game-high 23 points to lead Cabell Midland to an impressive win at Hurricane, 62-57.
Now a 7-1, the Knights are just one win away from equalling their win total from last season (8-15). The Redskins (9-2) were dealt just their second defeat of the year.
Hurricane jumped out to an 11-0 lead just minutes into the game. But the Knights closed the deficit to just three points after one quarter, trailing 19-16. Midland crept within a point, 31-30 at halftime.
A 10-0 Cabell Midland run late in the third quarter proved to be the difference. The Knights led 49-42 after three quarters. Hurricane closed to within a basket late in the fourth but Cabell Midland held off the rally to earn a critical MSAC victory.
Ty Sturm and Tanner Paugh each scored a dozen points for the Knights.
Hurricane was paced by Austin Dearing’s 18-point effort. Jacob Nicely scored 15 points and Joe Muto added 11.
“It is early in the season,” said second-year Cabell Midland head coach Rick Chaffin. “It is good for our kids. But in the larger scheme of things, we just want to get better every week. I am sure Hurricane does too. Whether win or lose this game, it is a good game for both teams. Both teams were put under pressure. Coaches like to see that and see how kids respond. So win or lose, it was a good game for both teams.”
