WHEELING, W.Va. — Notre Dame freshman Jaidyn West scored a team-high 21 points as the Irish posted their second quality road win in nine days, 66-63 at Wheeling Central Catholic.
Notre Dame (8-1) won at Trinity on Jan. 4 and they have defeated a pair of 2018 state semifinalists in the opening weeks of the season.
West buried three-pointers on back-to-back-to-back possessions in the third quarter as part of a 9-0 Irish run. “His defense early set the tone,” said Notre Dame head coach Jarrod West. “He got a few steals and he made them extend setting up their offense.”
“I told him he has to be the leader of this team.”
Wheeling Central (5-4) jumped out to a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Irish trimmed their deficit to just six points at halftime, trailing 30-24.
An 11-0 run in between the third and fourth quarters gave NDHS a lead they would not relinquish. Central trimmed the deficit to two points with two minutes remaining, but a corner three-pointer from Tyler Hardesty extended the Irish lead to five points with 90 seconds to play. Hardesty scored 14 points while Gabe Zummo added 13.
Anthony Robbins led Wheeling Central with 23 points.
