Accuweather: Areas surrounding Morgantown in path of winter weather, including possible ‘blizzard-like’ conditions in Preston County

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Meterologists say there are worse places to be this weekend than Morgantown.

In fact, there are much worse places to be than Morgantown, according to Accuweather Meterologist Dave Samuhel.

“Where it’s rain in Morgantown, it’s likely snow (in Wheeling),” he said. “The rain-snow line is not going to be that far to the north. It’s going to be really close to Interstate 70, maybe just south of Interstate 70.”

With winter weather advisories set to go into effect Saturday morning — there is expected to be significant snow in the areas north and east of Morgantown. Samuhel said there could be up to eight inches of snow north of Morgantown, including snowfalls Saturday and Sunday.

“We’ll likely see mostly snow out of the storm north of there,” he said.

Both major interstates 70 and 68 could be troubled by the weather, Samuhel said. That could cause potential travel concerns for those returning from Morgantown following the WVU-Kansas game, which tips at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Coliseum.

“Just to the north and just to the east, once you are into Garrett County and east of there in Maryland we’ll likely see a lot more snow and ice out of the storm,” he said. “The storm is taking a track right up the Ohio River.”

In Preston County, that could mean significant snow on the storm’s back-end on Sunday.

“It should go over to rain in Preston County for a time, but then on the back side of this storm they will likely have several inches of snow,” Samuhel said. “There will be a lot of lake effect moisture involved eventually. So I think it keeps snowing there right into Monday with the arctic air coming in.”

That arctic air will bring temperatures down into the teens during the day Sunday in the state’s northern region — where they will remain Monday.

“Real bad late tomorrow night and Sunday,” Samuhel said. “It could be an all-out blizzare (in Preston County) Sunday.”

Rapidly falling temperatures will cause a rapid freeze up and a quick one to three inches of snow in the Morgantown area Sunday, Samuhel added.

The first winter weather advisory is currently projected to go into effect at 10 a.m. by the National Weather Service. It will include parts of Pennsylvania, the northern panhandle, Wetzel, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, and Tucker counties.
