Lincoln halts Fairmont Senior’s 12-game win streak

SHINNSTON, W.Va. — A game-ending 11-0 run allowed Lincoln to snap Fairmont Senior’s 12-game win streak. The Cougars defeated their Big 10 Conference rivals 55-47 Friday night.

Lincoln (10-1) has won ten in a row since dropping their season-opener at Buckhannon-Upshur. The 47 points scored by the Polar Bears tied a season low — which came in their season-opening loss to Class AAA defending state champion Parkersburg.

Hannah Ferris led the Cougars with 16 points despite playing most of the game in foul trouble. Fellow sophomores Madi Martin and Victoria Sturm each added ten points for the Cougars.

Freshman Marley Washenitz led the Polar Bears with 18 points. Anysa Jordan added 16 and she surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the third quarter.

The game was tightly contested throughout. A 28-20 Lincoln cushion late in the second quarter represented the largest lead of the contest for either team until the Cougars pulled away late in the fourth quarter.

Fairmont Senior used a 9-0 run in between the third and fourth quarters to take a 45-41 lead with 5:20 to play. But the Cougars did not allow a point over the final 3:30 to become the first Class AA team to defeat the Polar Bears this season.

“Coming into the season, we knew maturity was going to be one thing we were going to have to develop,” said Lincoln head coach Rob Hawkins. “I thought they did a great job. They calmed down. They handled the pressure and then we started beating the pressure for layups.”

Fairmont Senior, Lincoln and North Marion are now tied atop the Big 10 standings. Each team has one loss in league play.
