Update: Carjacking suspect arrested

UPDATE 6:15 p.m. Saturday  Charleston Police Department reports the arrest of Anthony Clapham. Clapham was arrested by the St. Albans Police Department at approximately 4:30 PM  at a residence in the 200 block of Oliver Street.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Charleston Police Department has identified the man suspected of a Friday night carjacking at Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The suspect is Anthony Deshawn Clapham, 25, of Charleston.

The stolen vehicle was located around 10:30 Friday night near the Orchard Manor Housing complex according to Charleston Police. Investigators soon developed Clapham as the chief suspect.

Police had detained and questioned Clapham on an unrelated matter earlier in the day Friday, but he was not charged in that incident and was freed. He’s now wanted on a warrant of first degree robbery for the carjacking incident.

The female victim was not injured, but was forced out of her car near the hospital under the threat of physical violence. The incident happened about 7 p.m. Friday. The stolen vehicle was located about 10:30 p.m.

Anyone knowing Clapham’s whereabouts is asked to contact Charleston Police.
