Former Greenbrier County school counselor pleads guilty for grade inflation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former Greenbrier West High School employee pleaded guilty to mail fraud in Wednesday for using her position to inflate her daughter’s grades.

Mellissa Krystynak, 49, of St. Lucie, Florida, previously served as a counselor at the school between 2011 and 2017. Two of her children attended the school at the time.

Krystynak admitted to using her position to inflate at least 34 of her daughter’s grades, which the daughter used to receive more than 10 different college scholarships with a potential benefit of more than $20,000.

Krystynak will be sentenced on May 16; she faces up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
