CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — Chapmanville made a clutch steal in the final seconds to snap Logan’s 11-game win streak, 51-47, on Thursday night.
A capacity crowd at Danny Godby Gym was treated to another tightly-contested, defensive-minded matchup in which neither team led by more than six points.
Obinna Anochili-Killen scored 19 points to lead the Tigers (14-2) while Andrew Shull added 12.
David Early led all scorers with a 25 for Logan (15-2), which had possession with 10 seconds left, trailing by two. But the Tigers stole the inbounds pass and a breakaway layup by Devin Collins iced the game.
“I thought we were really good defensively tonight,” said Chapmanville coach Brad Napier. “Offensively, Logan did a great job guarding us. We struggled tonight offensively and missed some open shots. We hung in there on defense and I think defense is what won us the game.”
A 7-2 run gave Chapmanville a 24-20 lead into halftime.
Early’s 3-pointer midway through the third quarter tied the score at 29. A basket by Anochili-Killen on Chapmanville’s next possession gave the Tigers a lead they never relinquished. The Tigers led 39-35 after three quarters.
With one minute to play in the fourth quarter, a well-designed inbounds play led to a dunk for Anochili-Killen and the Tigers extended their lead to 49-43. A 3-point play by Logan’s Peter Noe cut the Wildcat deficit in half, and Early connected on a free throw to trim the margin to two points.
These teams will meet again at Willie Akers Arena in Logan on Feb. 8.
