Raleigh County doctor agrees to restitution for Medicare fraud

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Raleigh County doctor who pleaded guilty last week to defrauding Medicare and Medicaid has entered into a civil agreement to pay $200,000 in restitution.

West Virginia’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Department of Labor and the US Postal Inspection Service participated in the investigation of Dr. Manuel Barit, who was the only practicing physician at the Mullens Family Clinic in Wyoming County.

As part of the previous plea agreement, Barit admitted to submitting claims indicating he had treated patients at the clinic on dates when he was outside of the United States.  He also agreed to surrender his West Virginia medical license and his Drug Enforcement Administration registration.

Barit faces up to 10 years in prison, when he is sentenced in May.
