No longer signing with Pitt, Morgantown’s Nick Malone re-opening recruitment

Morgantown High offensive lineman Nick Malone — a Rivals three-star prospect — was committed to Pitt since August, but is looking elsewhere. He’s entertaining the possibility of attending West Virginia as a preferred walk-on.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown High offensive lineman Nick Malone confirmed he won’t sign with Pitt on Wednesday after re-opening his recruitment.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pounder committed to the Panthers in August after camping at Pitt in June.

But Pitt coaches did not subsequently make an in-home visit with Malone. He did not sign during the December early signing period, and recruiting sources say the Panthers rescinded their offer.

Rivals ranks him a three-star prospect. 247Sports also gave Malone three stars but has continued listing him as a Pitt commit.

As for hometown West Virginia, Malone expects to continue conversations with the new staff and head coach Neal Brown to see how he could fit in. The Rivals three-star lineman suggested he could sign as a preferred walk-on during the next signing period that begins April 1.

Malone also drew recruiting interest from Rutgers along with offers from Robert Morris and Eastern Kentucky.

Last season for the Mohigans, he primarily played offensive and defensive line, but switched to tight end late in the season, catching two passes for 36 yards.

As a defensive lineman he made 25 tackles, including six for a loss with a forced fumble.
