MONTGOMERY, W.Va. — There are many questions still unanswered about a Monday morning incident which left one man dead and a police officer on administrative leave.

“The incident started around city hall around 4:20 this morning and it escalated down third avenue,” said Montgomery Police Chief Paris Workman. “It was an officer involved shooting.”

The officer involved in the incident has not been identified, but has been played on administrative leave.  The man killed was Eric Young, 34, of Montgomery.

Circumstances which led to the shooting are also unknown at this point. Workman called in the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department to handle an external investigation of the incident.

“The investigation will continue and after it is complete it will be submitted to the Kanawha County Prosecutors office for review,” said Sgt. Brian Humphreys.

In addition to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department several other agencies are also involved in the probe including the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, Smithers Police, West Virginia State Police, and the Campus Police at Bridge Valley Community and Technical College.
