Town Center Mall store owner chases down alleged thief at his store

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An owner of a store at the Charleston Town Center Mall successfully chased down an alleged thief at his store on Monday.

David Miller, the owner of Sunglass Way inside the mall, told the story on Tuesday’s “580-LIVE with Danny Jones” on MetroNews affiliate 580-WCHS in Charleston.

Miller said a man walked up to him at his business on Monday afternoon around 2:15 and asked to try on a $300 pair of Versace sunglasses. According to Miller, when the man put the sunglasses on he took off running.

“I chased him through the mall,” Miller said. “I tracked the criminal, that’s what he is, is a criminal, through downtown Charleston. All the way to the boulevard, all the way around the police station and the courthouse.”

Miller said his pursuit ended in front of Bar 101 in downtown, which is about a half-mile from the mall.

“Right there on the corner of Virginia and Capitol Street,” he said. “I literally tackled him like a linebacker chasing a running back. I tackled him from behind, restrained him and police came in about two minutes and arrested him.”

According to Miller, the man he believed to be in his late 20s, did not have the sunglasses on him when he was taken into custody. He then denied stealing the sunglasses to police, Miller said.

“He had ditched them,” he said. “Somewhere in the pursuit he ditched them. He did not have them on him. We have video surveillance of him with them leaving the mall.”

Miller said the individual that was arrested had four warrants out for him already but he did not know what happened to him after the arrest.

Even with this incident, Miller believes the mall remains safe.

“The mall is safe,” Miller said. “I don’t know what happens entirely outside of the mall but we stick together with our neighbors inside. I try to help out The Buckle, American Eagle and Victoria’s Secret.”
