Caretaker arrested in Beckley cold case murder

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Police have arrested the former caretaker of a Beckley resident who died in an apparent homicide in 2014.

Jessica Lunceford, 45, of Beckley, was taken into custody Monday and charged with first-degree murder for the death of 76-year-old Sylvia Jean Washington, who was found dead inside her East Beckley home in April 2014. Lunceford was arrested without incident.

According to investigators, additional charges are pending and more arrests are possible.

The Crimestoppers of West Virginia Cold Case Task Force, the U.S. Marshal Service and the Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office assisted the Beckley Police Department in its investigation.
