West Virginia football lands first Class of 2020 commitment

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — One of the first players offered a scholarship to West Virginia by new coach Neal Brown is also the first in the Class of 2020 to say yes to the Mountaineers.

Receiver Reese Smith, a three-star prospect from Danville, Ky., committed to West Virginia on Monday. Smith attends Boyle County High School, which is Brown’s alma mater. Rivals rates Smith as the No. 8 recruit in the state of Kentucky in next year’s class.

Rivals.com’s Keenan Cummings describes Smith as having “excellent ball skills and balance” as well as being “fearless across the middle to boot.”

Smith has already taken two unofficial visits to WVU since landing a scholarship offer the day after Brown took the job. He also has offers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisville, Wake Forest and Cincinnati.

Smith is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound receiver who projects as a slot receiver at the college level. He had 1,150 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior.
