Death of inmate at Southern Regional Jail leads to lawsuit

BECKLEY, W.Va. — The medical services provider for Southern Regional Jail is being sued by a relative of an inmate who died at the facility, after treatment for a heart-related medical condition was delayed.

In the lawsuit, Primecare Medical of West Virginia Inc. is accused of negligence and reckless conduct related to the death of Christopher Reynolds during his incarceration in 2016. Rose Reynolds, the administrator of the man’s estate, filed a complaint against the care provider in Raleigh Circuit Court, alleging Primecare did not act in a timely manner after the inmate notified medical staff of a possible clot in his leg and potential heart issues.

According to the plaintiff, Primecare specifically failed to obtain a venous ultrasound requested by outside physicians, failed to timely notify on-call physicians and failed to transport Reynolds to a hospital in a timely manner for proper evaluation and treatment.

Reynolds’ estate is being represented by the law firm of Stroebel & Johnson PLLC in Charleston.
