Miner dead in incident at Greenbrier County mine

GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. — A coal miner is dead following injuries sustained Thursday from a fall at a Greenbrier County mine.

Adam DeBoard, of Craigsville, was a loader operator working at the Blue Knob Surface Mine. According to the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training, DeBoard, 38, fell from a highwall miner around 1:50 p.m.

South Fork Coal Company LLC is listed as the mine’s operator.

“West Virginia lost one of our dedicated coal miners today, and Cathy and I are deeply saddened at the news,” Gov. Jim Justice said in a statement. “We encourage everyone to join us in praying for the family, friends, and co-workers of Adam DeBoard of Craigsville. Brave and courageous miners like Mr. DeBoard are heroes to us all.”

An investigation has been launched into DeBoard’s death.
