McDowell County teen killed in ATV crash

WELCH, W.Va. — A McDowell County teen has died, after being injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash Tuesday.

The accident happened in the Hemphill area near Welch. According to West Virginia State Police investigators, the 17-year-old male victim, whose identity was not released, suffered multiple injuries when the ATV struck a tree.

State troopers who arrived at the scene reportedly attempted CPR when the victim stopped breathing during transport to the hospital, but were unable to revive him.

According to an initial statement from the Welch detachment of the State Police, the driver likely was traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident happened, noting the victim was found approximately 60 feet from the ATV.
