Baylor finishes strong to sweep West Virginia

WACO, Texas — Hoping to avoid a weekend sweep, West Virginia’s baseball team had a three-run lead in the seventh before Baylor rallied for a 10-4 win.

DH Paul McIntosh hit his team-leading fifth homer of the season for the Mountaineers (13-10, 0-3 Big 12), who chased Baylor starter Ryan Lockich in a three-run first.

The lead was 4-1 in the seventh before West Virginia’s Kade Strowd (2-2) ran into trouble.

After back-to-back two-out singles by Ryan Loftin and Richard Cunningham cut the gap to 4-3, Beau Lowery relieved and yielded a bases-loaded walk and two-run double to Andy Thomas.

Strowd allowed six runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 6 2/3 innings.

The Bears (16-6, 3-0) added three more runs on Thomas’ eighth-inning homer off Dillon Meadows. The ninth inning was not played after both teams agreed that a new inning would not be played after 4 p.m. to accommodate West Virginia’s travel schedule.

Luke Boyd (2-0) earned the win for Baylor with 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Kevin Trophy had two RBIs for West Virginia, which faces Marshall on Wednesday at in Charleston.
