Former Williamson basketball standout, coach fondly remembered

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — One of the giants of high school basketball in the coalfields has passed away.

Williamson’s Danny Moses died Monday morning at Pikeville Medical Center after suffering a major heart attack late last week.

Moses was a legend in the rivalry between Logan and the Wolfpack in the early 1970’s. Standing at 6’11, we was a high school All American both his junior and senior years at Williamson. National sports publications dubbed him “the mountains Mighty Moses.”

Moses originally committed to Marshall during his senior year of 1972, but when Thundering Herd Coach Carl Tacy left Huntington to be the new coach at Wake Forrest, Moses followed him to Winston Salem. He played one year for the Demon Deacons before transferring to Pikeville College to play out his career.

Moses was a long time educator and coach in the eastern Kentucky school system following his playing days.
