Father, son sentenced in government warehouse theft case

ELKINS, W.Va. — A father and son have been sentenced to four years probation each for stealing items from a government warehouse in Buckhannon.

Shane Morgan, 35, of Buckhannon, and Russell Morgan, 61, of Helvetia, were sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Elkins following earlier guilty pleas to charges of conspiracy to embezzle government property.

According to federal prosecutors, both men were members of the National Guard when they stole the items between 2010-2017 from the United States Property and Fiscal Office warehouse. The items stolen, sold or donated included a parachute, packing tables, a John Deere Gator and an inflatable bouncey house. The total worth was about $80,000.

Rusell Morgan was a Master Sergeant with the Guard. He had retired before he was indicted. Shane Morgan was a Sgt. First Class. His rank was reduced as a result of the investigation. He sepaated from the Guard in May 2018.

During Thursday’s sentencing, U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey ordered the pair to pay $11,614.45 in restitution.
