Elderly woman, pets killed in Roane County blaze

NEWTON, W.Va. — One woman and two dogs are dead following a house fire over the weekend in Roane County.

According to the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, the home on Hollywood Road in Newton is a complete loss after a Saturday morning blaze that killed an elderly woman and her pets.

Authorities said firefighters were battling the flames around 8 a.m. Saturday, but it may have been burning for much longer and went unnoticed because of the location of the home.

Investigators are still working on a cause of the blaze. The woman’s identification has not been released.
