Harrison County authorities investigating human remains found near Clarksburg

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Investigation continues in Harrison County after human skeletal remains were found Monday at a property along U.S. 19, just outside of Clarksburg city limits.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department received a call just before 10:30 a.m. Monday, and deputies responded to a residence at 1678 Milford Street, adjacent to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

Sheriff Robert Matheny said an individual who was doing work on the property discovered the remains, which deputies confirmed were human remains upon arriving on scene.

“Throughout the course of the day, State Police processed the scene and the county medical examiner, along with our detectives, collected the remains along with anything in that area that was thought to be related to the remains,” Matheny said.

The remains have since been submitted to the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

“At this point we’ll wait and hopefully try to identify the individual, and then we’ll try to determine a cause of death,” Matheny said. “At this time there’s no obvious signs of foul play, but that doesn’t mean that couldn’t change after getting the report from the medical examiner.”

Matheny said that detectives with the Sheriff’s Department are working with the Clarksburg Police Department to collect any missing persons reports.

“There are several that we’re aware of and looking at,” he said. “But there’s always the possibility that it’s not someone local or that is wasn’t reported.”
