BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — A mother who originally told authorities a man tried to abduct her five-year-old daughter from the Old Navy store at Huntington Mall was arraigned Friday on a misdemeanor charge of falsely reporting an emergency.

Bond was set at $20,000 during the arraignment of Santana Renee Adams. She was charged earlier Friday by Barboursville police.

Charges were dropped Thursday against Mohamed Zayan, the man Adams told police grabbed her daughter’s hair Monday night and tried to abduct her. Police said Adams later changed her story and said the situation with Zayan may have been a cultural misunderstanding.

Zayan’s attorney, Michelle Protzman, told MetroNews Thursday the video she’s seen doesn’t put Zayan anywhere near the girl. Adams also said she used a gun to scare off Zayan. Protzman said she didn’t see a gun in any of the video she reviewed. Zayan spent a night in jail on $200,000 bail.

Adams posted bond Friday evening.
