NUTTER FORT, W.Va. — Wheeling Central Catholic took advantage of six Notre Dame errors to defeat the Irish 11-3 on the final day of the West Virginia Catholic Schools tournament. Both teams closed the tourney with 2-1 records.

All six Notre Dame errors led directly to seven Wheeling Central runs. The Maroon Knights trailed 3-2 heading into the fourth inning but they exploded for five runs in the frame to take a lead they would not relinquish. Three of Irish errors came in the fourth inning.

After a rocky start, Mike Toepfer earned the win on the mound for Wheeling Central. He struck out three batters and allowed three runs and three hits before reaching the pitch limit with two outs in the sixth inning.

Central (7-4) defeated Huntington St. Joseph’s and lost to Charleston Catholic on Friday. The Irish (8-4) swept a pair of games from Charleston Catholic and Madonna earlier in the tournament.
