Former WVSSAC Executive Secretary Bill Hanlin dies

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Mid-Ohio Valley and Glenville State Hall of Famer Bill Hanlin passed away on Friday. He was 88.

Hanlin was an accomplished coach and athletics administrator at many levels. He served as the executive secretary of the WVSSAC from 1985-1988. Hanlin was also the assistant executive secretary in the previous decade from 1975-1985.

Hanlin was a native of Sistersville. He began his coaching career at Tyler County High School, guiding the football, basketball and baseball teams. Hanlin later moved to Saint Marys High School where he guided the 1963 football team on an undefeated run to a state championship. That team did not allow a single point all season.

Hanlin played football at Glenville State College and he returned to GSC in 1966 to lead the Pioneer football program. He spent nine seasons as head coach. Hanlin led the Pioneers to an undefeated regular season in 1973 and that team would later advance to the NAIA Division II championship game.

The recently built stadium at Saint Marys High School was named in honor of Hanlin.
