Suspect arrested in latest violent incident on Beckley’s Rails-to-Trails

BECKLEY, W,Va. — A Raleigh County man has been arrested in connection with a recent stabbing on Beckley’s Rail-to-Trails.

Beckley Police announced Wednesday Gilbert Raymond Richardson, 38, of Beckley was taken into custody April 30, following an incident in which a man was stabbed multiple times, while walking on the trail in the area of N. Kanawha St. April 22.

The victim was taken to Raleigh General Hospital, and has since recovered from his injuries. His identity was not released.

Richardson was charged with malicious wounding and was taken to Southern Regional Jail.

The attack was the fourth violent incident reported in the past nine months on the 4.2-mile walking trail, which begins in Mabscott and ends at the Beckley Crossing Shopping Center. An alleged sexual assault occurred on the trail in August 2018, followed by another reported sexual assault in September 2018. Later that month, a Beckley man was arrested for allegedly firing a gun at another man walking on the trail. No injuries were reported in the incident.

A possible motive for the most recent incident has not been disclosed.
