CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state’s maximum security prison remained locked down much of Wednesday as state Corrections Officials and the West Virginia State Police conducted a review of a Tuesday evening fight in the recreation yard.

“We had a inmate on inmate assault involving at least one makeshift weapon,” said Lawrence Messina, spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety. “The assault occurred in the recreation yard.”

Messina could not say the exact time of the incident, but all prisoners were placed in their cells on lock-down in the wake of the incident.

Two of the inmates were transported to areas hospitals as a precaution. A third inmate involved in the fight was treated at the prison infirmary.

The names of the inmates and what the fight was over are part of the ongoing investigation and haven’t been revealed.
