Thousands of Kanawha County residents without power

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — Appalachian Power crews have been working on restoring electricity for thousands of customers in St. Albans after power lines fell Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 2:45 p.m. on Dry Ridge Road. A school bus carrying 4 children was near the power pole when it fell.

“I heard a popping and crashing sound, and then it’s on me. These wires fell down,” bus driver Phil Lanz said. “I had the window cracked open to get a little air. Sparks were coming in on me. Kids started screaming.”

Lanz and the children were not injured.

Appalachian Power estimates services for more than 3,300 customers will be restored by midnight.
