Sentencing in Fayette County grant case

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An administrator of a planned recovery housing program was sentenced Monday after making false grant reimbursement requests to the state.

David Stevens, 57, accepted $501,500 in grant funding for a planned facility in Mount Hope. Open Minds Recovery Services Inc. was pitched as a program for adult males centered on substance misuse and mental health.

According to U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart, Stevens in July 2016 began requesting reimbursement from the state Department of Justice and Community Services for funds that the company had not used.

Stevens later admitted to spending the money for personal benefits as well as to benefit other companies.

He will spend six months in prison and six months of home confinement. Stevens will also have to pay more than $137,000 in restitution to the state.
