CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Personnel Board approved a proposal from the state Department of Transportation Thursday that will include Division of Highways workers who are currently paid under the agency’s tiered pay program in the state workers pay raise approved by state lawmakers earlier this year.
State Division of Personnel Director Sheryl Webb said the state Personnel Board approved the tiered pay program a few years ago so any proposed changes need to come back before the board.
“Since it was action that initially came to the board, any changes to the program have to also subsequently be approved by the board,” Webb said.
Thursday’s vote was for an across-the-board raise for DOH workers in the tiered program.
State lawmakers allocated money in the new state budget to cover an average five percent pay raise for workers. Lawmakers haven’t yet approved language for pay raises for teachers and school service personnel.
Meanwhile, the DOH is still working on a plan to update the agency’s classification specifications to include a compensation plan. The state Personnel Board has discussed the plan in the past. There’s no specific timeline on when the DOH will have its plan completed and ready for review.
