Wide receiver Dillon Spalding transfers to WVU’s Week 1 opponent

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It turns out wide receiver Dillon Spalding has not made his final appearance at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Spalding, who announced last week that he is transferring from West Virginia, has chosen to continue his college football career at James Madison. The Dukes will be in Morgantown for the season opener on Aug. 31.

Because James Madison is an FCS program, Spalding is eligible to play immediately. He has four years remaining.

Spalding is a redshirt freshman who sat out last season with an injury. He participated in spring practice with the Mountaineers, but was not a threat to crack the starting lineup this season.

A 6-foot-1, 217-pound native of Lorton, Va., Spalding chose initially West Virginia over Michigan and East Carolina in December 2017. He will be closer to home with the move to James Madison’s campus in Harrisonburg, Va.

Receiver Marcus Simms has also entered the portal from WVU, but has yet to find a destination.

The Mountaineers have three receivers in the incoming freshman class: Terence Doston (5-10, 160), Ali Jennings (6-2, 186) and Winston Wright (5-11, 166). West Virginia is also attempting to get a waiver for Temple transfer Sean Ryan (6-4, 195) so he does not have to sit out the upcoming season.
