WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced in a tweet late Saturday night that West Virginia legend Jerry West would soon receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor for a civilian.
West turned 81 last Tuesday.
The Great Jerry West will be receiving our Nation’s highest civilian honor, The Presidential Medal of Freedom, for his outstanding career, both on and off the court. Happy Birthday Jerry! @Sen_JoeManchin https://t.co/3kNEpteYfW

Trump noted the Chelyan native’s accomplishments both on and off the court in his tweet.
West, who retired as a player after the 1974 season, is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s also had tremendous success in running NBA teams as GM, president and special consultant.
President Trump tagged U.S. Senator Joe Manchin in his tweet.
Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients are usually honored in a White House ceremony. No date has been given for the West ceremony.
President Trump honored golfer Tiger Woods with the medal in a May 6 ceremony.
Jerry West is one of the most recognized athletes in the world, and while I'm proud to call him a national champion, Olympic gold medalist, & distinguished West Virginian, I'm even more proud to call Jerry my friend. Thanks @realDonaldTrump for honoring Jerry's accomplishments! https://t.co/tr9pkT8BYU
