Incumbent Mullens defeats Robb in South Charleston mayoral race

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Frank Mullens will remain in his position as South Charleston mayor.

The Republican incumbent defeated Democrat and former South Charleston Mayor Richie Robb by picking up nearly 68-percent of the vote in Saturday’s General Election.

Mullens said the voters of South Charleston sent two clear messages.

“One they approve the direction the city is going in,” he said. “Two they are not going to award dirty, untruthful campaigning.”

The two competed in a hotly contested race, with Robb against retail development at the former FMC Fly Ash Pond and increase in sewer rates in the city.

Mullens backed the increase, citing it had to be done with as the Sanitary Board was operating on violation.

This will be Mullens’ fourth term as mayor as he has held the seat since 2007. He said he is excited for another term.

“Our future is as bright as it has been in decades,” Mullens said.

“We have our new district. Our financial situation is in good shape, we have hundreds of millions of dollars in new construction over the next several years with the fly ash pond and Jefferson Road.”

Other winners include: Municipal judge, Wyatt Hanna; City clerk, Margie Spence; City council ward 1, Kent Rymer; City council ward 2, Mark Wolford; City council ward 3, Kathleen Fox Walker; City council ward 4, Chuck Hudson; City council ward 5, David DiFilippo; City council ward 6, Robert W. Lilly; City council ward 7, Jamie Sibold; City council ward 8, Adam Strider.
