CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Stormy weather is continuing to affect most of the state on Wednesday.
Early Wednesday morning and into the late morning, the rain has moved through the state including the Northern Panhandle to Central West Virginia and down into the Kanawha Valley and south to the coal fields.
“Most of these storms are not looking too strong this morning (Wednesday), but there will be occasional brief heavy downpours, flashes of lightning, rumbles of thunders that type of thing,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Ross Giarratana told MetroNews.
“It’s the second round that could occur in the early to mid-evening hours that we will be watching for the potential of stronger storms.”
The second round is expected to occur around 5 p.m. in some parts of the state and last late into the evening producing a good chance for rain overnight.
Giarratana said the storms on Wednesday in West Virginia have movement on them, meaning the chances for flooding remain low.
“We don’t expect them to at least hover for an extended period of time,” he said.
“If it does occur, that’s when the water issues become a bit more prominent. So there could be some localized flooding issues but we are not expecting any widespread at this point.”
As for any outdoor activities on Wednesday, the early afternoon will be your best bet to get them in.
“There are some areas that will have a bit of a break this afternoon,” Giarratana said. “In general, if you are planning to spend quite a bit outdoors today it’s a good idea to monitor the skies, have your mobile devices with you in case any warnings get issued.
“The environment is favorable to see some stronger storms today (Wednesday).”
Drier air is expected to move in from the north on Thursday night into Friday.
