Wood County jury splits on mercy in murder trial

WOOD COUNTY, W.Va. — Two people convicted of murder this week were sentenced to life in prison, yet one person will be eligible for parole.

Jessica Roberts, 27, and Kenneth McCoy, 34, were found guilty of murder, conspiracy to commit a criminal offense, first-degree robbery, burglary and grand larceny.

Both were charged following the death of Penni Jo Curtiss at a Tygart Street residence. The two stole Curtiss’ car and were later found at a Walmart in Flora, Illinois.

Roberts will receive mercy, making her eligible for parole.

A licensed psychologist testified Tuesday, saying Roberts acted in fear of McCoy and rationalized his actions.
