Stuart issues warning after THC candy seized

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart is warning the public about the threat of edible products infused with the chemical that gives marijuana its psychoactive effect.

Members of the Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Initiative seized a package with 7.5 pounds of THC-infused candy on June 15.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the package came from California and was postmarked for Florida. The product’s packaging was clearly marked with warnings about keeping out of the reach of children.

Stuart said the concern is the packaging of the THC product was “almost identical” to commercially-available products; the logo on the product resembled that of the candy Nerds Rope.

“It is packaged like candy. It looks like popular candy. It tastes like candy. But, instead, it is a very powerful and potent way to get high,” he said. “Any unsuspecting child or teenager could easily stumble along a package and innocently eat it not realizing the potency of the THC infused in the product.”

Stuart added the candy had 35 % more THC than an average joint.
